Subdivisions of the Merchant Federation of Durius

Patrician cities are the constituent city-states of the Merchant Federation. Each city-state is equally represented by a patrician in the Patrician Council. Furthermore, they hold autarchic power over their territory, often consisting of the city itself and the surrounding rural areas and satellite cities that support it.

Charter cities are foreign-governed cities that have received a charter by the Merchant Federation and thus enjoy certain merchant rights and nonvoting-representation in the Patrician Council. The status is granted to cities that have close ties with the Merchant Federation, often from protectorate states, and are eligible to accede to the Merchant Federation as patrician cities.

Unincorporated territories are territories of the Merchant Federation without self-governance nor representation in the Patrician Council. They consist chiefly of uninhabited or sparsely populated areas, away from the influence of charted cities, but they might also include territories of military or ecological significance. The territories are governed by common federal law.

Autonomous communities are territories of the Merchant Federation with self-governance, but no representation in the Patrician Council. They consist of regions of historical, ethnic/racial or cultural importance, but do not constitute a consolidated urban center that's eligible for charter rights. Protectorates are subjects of the Merchant Federation whose military, diplomatic or external trade affairs are handled by the Patrician Council, but hold no representation in it. Protectorates are eligible to become autonomous regions of the Merchant Federation or seek full independence. Currently, a single territory is a protectorate:
