During the blackout there was a study which came out suggesting that dark energy is weakening. A lot more research is required before it becomes a genuine competitor to the current assumption of it being a constant throughout space or to check if the conclusion of the survey it's derived from will change as their mapping continues, but if this is eventually confirmed it could mean that the universe will in fact end in a Big Crunch after all, despite Heat Death kicking it aside for a couple decades.
