Description

The Sturmgewehr 13, is an advanced Austro-German assault rifle developed Großweg & Hollahofen, a notable Austro-German firearms and ammunition manufacturer, initially put forward for the Advanced Infantry Weapon Program, a program intended to replace the aging StG-79 with a new service rifle firing a stronger cartridge to the demanded specifications. It was offered as AIW Rifle Design No.4, competing with the likes of Esrinn, Edenshel GmBH, Angougny Arsenal, and other smaller companies for the massive contract.

The rifle itself is comprised of a relatively compact bullpup platform that is preferred by the Reichswehr for its mechanized doctrine. Along with this, it is considered rather modular, with extensive use of picatinny rails and a threaded barrel for the attachment of muzzle devices depending on the needs of the mission. Along with this, it has a hammer forged barrel that is notably free floating, which grants the rifle incredible accuracy at range due to the barrel not being disturbed by attached furniture or pressures. It also features a chrome lined barrel and bore. The rifle itself is gas operated, with a short stroke gas piston setup paired with a closed rotating bolt, giving it resistance from debris getting in the action, and further accuracy due to the closed bolt setup. It also has multiple firing modes, by gift of being select fire, it has the ability to be switched from semi-automatic fire to full auto, but also a less common three round burst setting for ammo conservation and lately for increased hit probability at range.

The weight is rather manageable, due to it using advanced materials such as titanium alloys, polymer furniture, and high strength light weight steel blends. Due to this, it’s incredibly light, but due to the ammunition it fires, it needed an advanced recoil mitigation system engineered into it via an internal counterweight system not to eliminate recoil, but to control it, so now the rifle displays a rather controllable and surprisingly gentle recoil impulse that is horizontal with no lateral or vertical movement of the muzzle in conjunction with the featured muzzle brake. Instead the impulse goes directly into the shooters shoulder in a rate that can be easily accounted for, and with the burst fire mode, all rounds have left the barrel before the impulse hits the shooter.

In regards to ergonomics, the rifle is sure to surprise even the most critical of it, especially to those who oppose bullpups within the Reichswehr chain of command, seeing that it is fully ambidextrous, with the firing selector, magazine release, safety, and charging handle all mirrored to both sides of the rifle. But not just that, the ejection port can be swapped to the right side for left handed shooters, what is traditionally a major issue for traditional bullpups.

The ammunition it fires is also a major update. Prior to the StG-13, the Reichswehr used 7.92×33mm Kurz as the standard intermediate cartridge for its forces. But this choice of ammunition has been showing it’s age for a quite a while, as it has subpar muzzle velocities and armor penetration capabilities that the OHL wanted rectified. What was devised as its replacement was 7.92×43mm PCT (Polymer, Case Telescoped), a catridge that has extremely strong muzzle energy and velocity for the bullet size, being comparable to 5.56mm NATO, if slower by 100m/s. However, it still makes a breakneck 800-880m/s velocity, and with the large bullet that is a little over 2mm in diameter larger than 5.56, and longer, it has incredible ballistic performance. It’s polymer cased, which grants benefits to cutting down on chamber heating and cuts weight by upwards of 40% compared to if it was traditional brass, but it is also case telescoped, bringing benefits to protecting the bullet in storage and during transportation, an important feature given the far flung nature of the reichswehr’s supply lines. It’s drawback is that without recoil mitigation, it is very unforgiving, but the StG-13 having a counterweight system means that in its case, and doesn’t have as much to worry about.

Along with the standard rifle configuration, it also comes with a carbine model and an integrally suppressed model for covert operations.
