Encyclopedia Skalliadana: Monoliths of the Multiverse

One of the Monoliths in the territory of Skalliad.

General description:

Monoliths are objects of various sizes and shapes, visually composed of an unknown glossy material (presumably unknown metal). They are used to teleport living beings and objects between different universes of the Multiverse, allowing their nations to interact with each other militarily, economically, politically and culturally. At the moment, information about Monoliths is extremely scarce, as it is not possible to research them.

Origin:

According to unconfirmed information, the first two Monoliths were discovered by the first two ancient unidentified nations in two different universes, allowing them to begin trading with each other, which was the beginning of the existence of the Multiverse. It is not possible to verify this event, as well as to determine its details at the moment. Both scientists and representatives of various religions propose various theories of the origin of Monoliths, but none of them can be proved by scientific methods.

Method of operation:

Different Monoliths have different range of action, from a few centimeters to infinity (presumably). However, in most explored universes of the Multiverse, the range of action of Monoliths is 1000 kilometers (621 miles). The method of operation of Monoliths is that they cannot be activated without an outside observer. Only an outside observer can teleport themselves and/or objects belonging to them to another universe if they are within range of action of any Monolith, and if they then think about teleporting to the desired universe. Presumably, Monoliths also allow universes to be teleported from one local cluster of universes (so-called "regions" of Multiverse) to another.

Where they can be found:

Monoliths are static objects that never change their location in space, but can appear and disappear. When new universes with unique nations appear, the first Monoliths that connect them to other universes of the Multiverse always appear on their territories, after which additional Monoliths may begin to appear. In turn, when such unique nations are destroyed or disappear, all Monoliths in their universes disappear with them, closing them off from other universes of the Multiverse. This process is called "Cease to Exist (CTE)". Most Monoliths are dug into the ground, or levitating close above the ground or water. Less commonly, they can be found underground, deep in oceans and seas, or somewhere in outer space.

Research:

To research and create a map of Monoliths, the "Multiverse Research Foundation" was created by an unidentified ancient nation, now supported by virtually all nations of the Multiverse. Staff and volunteers of the MRF work tirelessly to find new universes, and to inform their inhabitants about the capabilities of Monoliths and the existence of the Multiverse. Despite the joint efforts of all the nations supporting MRF, including the most technologically and magically advanced, the secret of Monoliths has not been revealed yet. Most scientists agree that Monoliths are not real physical objects, and are in space only visually. Any direct and indirect attempts by sentient beings to physically interact with Monoliths in order to research them do not provide any results, as if they do not exist, or end in teleportation of sentient beings, objects used by them, as well as living beings used by them to another location in the same universe. According to numerous researches, Monoliths are able to read the minds of sentient beings, and they never teleport sentient beings and objects to places where they can be harmed, which indirectly indicates that Monoliths are sentient beings, or they are controlled by one or many sentient beings.
