Roleplay in the NWU

In the NWU, our RP is based on a futuristic world where technology advanced much quicker than in real life. All of our actions in this world are based on, and documented on, maps of Earth, the Galaxy and Mars/Venus, although the last one isn't frequently used, so it could be more boring and eventless. Deciding where to go could be difficult, but once you've found an unclaimed area on any of the maps, you can make a claim to make it officially yours!
Here are the main maps that we use:

How to get on the Map
There are a number of criteria prospective nations must adhere to in order to receive and maintain place on the map. These criteria as well as other important things to note are listed below:
- N O T E S
The first thing to note is that while the NWU does include and encourage an extensive range of fantasy and sci-fi elements, there are slightly more strict requirements for the Earth Map specifically.
Earth Nations should ideally be based on their real-life counterparts. For example, if you claimed Germany, your country should be based somewhat on Germany, however, there is more creative freedom for how you envision the country in the decades between the real-life timeline and our future timeline.
Have a somewhat believable and realistic in-character nation name. What this means is that if the in-character name of your country is not it's real-life name, it should at least be based on another name within that country. For example, if Britain became a republic, it could be referred to as the "Albion Republic".
Have at least one "overview" factbook detailing important aspects of your country, preferably with a wikipedia-style sidebar. This is to ensure that applicants have an idea of the country they want to play as and what direction to take it in.
The RP begins in the year 2048 with an alien invasion arc covering 2040-2045. The historical details and points of interest of the players country between IRL (2023) and the RP Start Date are free to be filled in by the player.
The earliest Point-of-Divergence (POD) is 1945, ie. the post-WWII and into the Cold War period for ease of continuity management.
Exceptions can be made for players that would otherwise exist within another player country, if an agreement is made with said player.
Puppet Accounts are not permitted in our RP. This is not, however, the same thing as having "puppet states" within the RP itself. Throughout the course of many player interactions countries may be, for one reason or another, puppeted by another country, with governments friendly to the occupier established in their place.
While player nations that are of Alien Origin are not permitted to colonise or have territory on Earth from the outset of their claim, it is perfectly reasonable to play as other Sentient Races that may be native to Earth who evolved and developed alongside Humans. This is particularly applicable to legacy players who have been in the region for long periods of time and who have been on the Earth Map while not being Human-orientated nations, such as Vampires and Ghouls. It should be noted that to maintain an element of realism in this case, claims by non-human nations may be altered to places that are sparsely populated by humans or areas that are generally inhospitable, to ensure that they can both exist and so as to not interfere as much with real-life countries in terms of history, etc.
Once you have everything figured out, send a claim request to Unified Empiricus with the following information:
Account Name (out-of-character)
Nation Name (in-character) and its abbreviation, if applicable
- What your country is called in-character, for example, "Unified Empiricus" in-character is the "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland", which is also abbreviated to simply the "UK"
Your nations name in it's native language, if you want to include it, for example the "French Republic" is, in French, "République Française"
Government type (monarchy, republic, stratocracy, etc.)
- For example, how the United States of America is a "Federal Presidential Constitutional Republic", or how the United Kingdom is a "Unitary Parliamentary Constitutional Monarchy"
Head of Government or Head of State or Both plus their names
- Some countries have only a Head of State (such as the President of the United States who is both the symbol of the nation and the leader of its government) whereas other countries have both a Head of State and Head of Government (such as the United Kingdom where the Monarch is the Head of State and performs mostly ceremonial duties while the day-to-day running of the country is undertaken by the Prime Minister who is the Head of Government)
For more information via Wikipedia: Head of State, Head of Government
Location claim request
Secondary claim request (if first claim is unavailable)
Have you read and agree to the regional RP rules as listed?
You may begin taking part in our Roleplay after the application has been accepted, you do not need to wait to be placed on the map to begin taking part as it may take a period of time for the map to be edited, updated and posted.
If there is anything you are unsure about, feel free to ask Unified Empiricus about whatever it is you need to clear up, whether its through Telegram, Discord or the Regional Message Board (RMB).
A P P L I C A T I O N
In order to maintain your place on the map, you should endeavour to remain as active as reasonably possible. Not everybody has the ability to commit the amount of time they may like to for various reasons, and that's fine. If you're on the map and you know you may be inactive for a period of time, simply let Unified Empiricus know that this is the case. We try, to the best of our ability, to make the NWU an open, welcoming and casual atmosphere, instead of an overly-structured, overbearing, regimental system - because that's no fun for anyone. We hope you enjoy your time in the NWU and enjoy our RP!

So, now you've chosen your location, it's time to get you onto the map! The easiest and most reliable method is to join the Discord server and navigate to the #rp-map-claims channel. There, announce your nation's name and where you would like to claim. Then, you should have your claim added within a few days/weeks, depending on how busy the roleplay director is. If, however, you cannot join the discord, the best thing to do would be to announce your claim on the regional message board.
If it is taking a while to get onto the map, you can still begin RPing without your claim, so long as you are sure that no-one owns that area.
Once you have a map claim, you can begin roleplaying! First things first, read the rules here, so you know what you can and can't do:

OVERVIEW
This article is designed to lay the groundwork for RP within the NWU. This article defines the rules of RP as well as numerous terms used to describe the RP, as well as giving helpful tips and suggestions to both new and old players. All RP is done on the RMB (Regional Message Board).

TERMS
-
In-Character
Also known as IC, when you are In-Character you are speaking or acting as your nation, or, speaking as a character or representative from within your nation. When speaking In-Character, you are speaking as a fictional character interacting with another, therefore it is imperative to note that insults/intentions/statements are not directed at the player behind the keyboard, but at the character itself. When posting on the RMB, you should make it clear you are speaking IC.
Out-of-Character
Also known as OOC, when you are speaking Out-of-Character, you are speaking as yourself, with your actual opinions. When you say something OOC you are directing your words towards another player and not a character. It goes without saying that players are expected to maintain a respectful manor and avoid insults of inflammatory statements. It is not required to put "OOC" before a post, as its generally only RP posts that are to be made clear as such.
DOs and DONTs
DO: Keep OOC and IC seperate.
DO: Correct someone if they make a mistake, major or minor, to ensure everyone understands the RP scenario.
DO: Make detailed posts - not unnecessarily long, but include all the details you want the RP community to be aware of.
DO: Acknowledge your nations limits - Ensure you have a basic rundown of the numbers, and that they can be backed up.
DONT: God-Mod - Don't pull a fleet of ships out of nowhere, make a character invincible, or fix a crisis or bad situation instantly and without repercussions.
DONT: Confuse the Region with the RP Universe. The RP Universe where all the RP takes place is not the same as the Region, the region is Out-of-Character/Out-of-Universe.
DONT: Kill off a players characters without asking them first.
POINT 1 | RP Consent
-
Consent between the Roleplayers is recommended for RP to begin. Most RP however is spontaneous, meaning that anyone and everyone can join in and improvise depending on the scenario. If a player does not want to engage in a RP, that is their right. This is a way to avoid RP being intrusive upon a player, not to avoid being challenged by another player.
POINT 2 | Accept the effects of RP
-
When Roleplaying, things can change rapidly. You may go to war and loose, and be forced to surrender territory or resources. This is part of the general immersion and allows for interesting scenarios to appear, and one must accept the effects. Allow your nation to rise and fall appropriately. Always make sure you are aware of what has happened, and if you aren't, just ask!
General Consent: If in a war the victors demands are unreasonable (taking half your land and restructuring your government are a few examples), then you can challenge this, but in the spirit of cordial RP, it is expected this situation will not arise. If it does however, you can take it up with the Roleplay Secretary. Afterwards, the outcome should be explained in an IC post.
No Risk, No Fun: If a war breaks out, the nations involved must accept that there will be losses, not just of numbers and manpower but of resources, and they must accept that there will be repercussions. An atmosphere of realism and tension is where the best RP happens. If you join a war, you must be willing to lose - and lose badly if that's the shape the RP takes.
POINT 3 | Realism
-
When creating statistics, you have a finite population and finite amount of money when creating statistics or posting about troop numbers. An element of realism must be present in the RP. You are not required to make detailed mathematical equations or calculate detailed costs versus troop numbers - though if you want to, all the better - but do not expect to be able to RP that you are funding billions of soldiers with high powered rifles and personal battle tanks without any extreme economic impact or debt - unless you can prove the fundamental realism.
POINT 4 | Limits on Numbers
-
Population Limits
Population Limits are based on different factors the main one is the size of the territory you have. The larger your territory the larger your population can be, but it doesn't necessarily have to be larger. Nations with extra-solar colonies will have larger populations.
-
Military Limits
As with the population limit, nations with larger territories are able to have a larger military, and this limit is expanded by having extra-solar colonies. Nations with lower levels of technology will have higher limits.
POINT 5 | Recognising your limits
-
Your tanks and spaceships are not indestructible, lasers cannot cut through any material or shoot through a moon. Keep your RP within basic scientific probability. So, no Death Stars or Time Travel. If you are unsure whether or not your weapon or ship is possible, simply ask around, there are a number of Veteran Roleplayers around at any given time.
Characters: The above does not include individual characters, but you must recognise the limits of your characters. If your character is overpowered, you may likely be called upon to get rid of them or, alternatively, limit their power or their usage. Just to be safe, its recommended you use extremely powerful characters in positions of authority and not the front lines, that means to say, make them a General or Minister of Defence instead of a foot soldier.
POINT 6 | Tech Level
-
Levels
Gravity Wells of any kind
Ability to move stars or planets
Shields spanning the diameter of Solar Systems
No Destruction or Creation of Universes, Galaxies, Solar Systems or Planets - the creation of planets is allowed
The level of technology your nation has is at the players discretion as the NWU is a Custom-Based Roleplay, and if a players preference is higher technological advancement; the higher the preference the higher the requirements, and like before, those requirements are based on your level of economy.
Limits
Technology must be scientifically reasonable, for example, spaceships cannot be any larger than 600 Kilometers / 373 Miles, which is the distance from London to Limerick. Google is a good place to look for technology, just be sure it conforms to the reasonable limits.
Selling or otherwise passing on Tech
Technology may be resold or re-gifted to other nations, provided that the chain of custody between nations is fully described and established via RP. Received technology may not be reversed-engineered, re-created, or otherwise produced by the receiving nation unless stated otherwise IC by the gifter. Gifted or sold technology may not malfunction, impede, or otherwise sabotage their current owner unless explicitly stated that they are capable of such, or have been manipulated to do so and has been stated to be possible.
- Technology cannot surpass the following boundaries:
If you know the rules, you can begin making posts. Posts are posted onto the Regional Message Board for all the region to see, but they are sometimes on the discord instead. I would recommend the Regional Message Board, since it will increase the chances of people seeing it.
Now, it's time to write up your post. They generally contain information on what is happening in your country, or a diplomatic message to another country, so get thinking of what it will contain. For your first post, it is likely that you will want to introduce your leader, country or similar so everyone knows what your country is about. I would recommend writing a small newspaper-style report about your country's independence, but it's up to you.
Deciding what style to write in can be the hardest part, so here are some tips. There are many different styles you can choose from, but here are some of the most common ones and what they are used for:
Newspaper:
This is most likely the easiest type, as it doesn't need to be too detailed or use much descriptive language. It can be used for pretty much anything, but I would recommend using it mostly for smaller events that you don't want to drag out too much. The great thing about this style is that you can write as little as a sentence, or write out a whole report. For these reasons, this is probably the best type to start out with.
Story:
Now onto what is probably the hardest type. This involves weaving a story together, and generally includes a highly detailed description of what is going on in the event, although it doesn't necessarily need to be world-class. This style is best suited for battles, war and rebellion, since these can lead to an intriguing, as well as informational, story.
Transmission:
This type of roleplay can be used in two major ways: sending messages to other nations, or for revealing messages that have been sent during war. This section includes sending letter-style messages and telegram-style. These messages can have styling using dashes, hyphens and hashtags to separate areas, like a message being printed off, or could be left blank. However, remember that if you are messaging another player on the Regional Message Board, tag them in the message by typing in: [nation](Their nation name)[/nation].
There are more styles to find, but these are the main ones. For more, look out for other people's posts to see what they do.
