The war between Glaslen and Lovastria began on July 9, 1834, following the official declaration of war made by King Gerald III, which the government was all but militarily prepared for. The military had been downsized significantly since the end of the revolution, since it was widely believed that Glaslen would never find itself at war again, however, the trade policies had created during his first term had significantly affected the Lovastrian economy severely. In addition, the closure of ties with Lovastria's ally, the Venuron Empire, had further infuriated the pro-Venuron King Gerald. With the outbreak of war, both sides began to mobilize their armies, which Glaslen was at disadvantage since Lovastria had a larger force of 250,000 versus 73,000. In response to the situation at hand, the Director of War at the time, Ctibor Hrubý, wrote and enacted the Conscription Act of 1834, requiring anyone between seventeen to fifty-one years to report for duty. As not to have ranks of untrained conscripts, the first training camps for the army and navy were established, Kirschhügel being the first for the army and Přístaviště Stivín for the navy. In the meantime, while fresh conscripts were being trained up, the military had to work with its present number of battle-ready troops and sailors, while also trying to determine how to combat against a larger force. General Carolus Voelz, veteran of the revolution and newly promoted, was placed in charge of overseeing Glaslian lines throughout the duration of the war, and his first move was to take a cautious approach against the Lovastrians. He understood that the Lovastrians would be extremely arrogant while pushing inland, since they too were aware of the military's small size, which would cause them to be overconfident of an easy victory. In the meantime, partisans to the north exchanged fire with Lovastrian forces marching across the border, taking minimal casualties but unable to slow the advance westward. Within three days, the town of Calpwitz fell, then Oselheim by day fifteen. In the south, Galofrasian Kobonici saw successes in halting the enemy, showing no mercy upon the fields. Eventually, Voelz knew his next move was to catch the enemy by surprise, and he needed the complete cover of darkness to execute his plan.
