It was connected to the mainland around ~270 years ago, and then there was a cataclysmic event that tore the western part of the nation into relatively large islands, while sinking a good portion of the area.

Legend says that his death can be attributed to the Battle of Aldmer, when Marakharth was divided in civil war between the Marakharthian Loyalists and Thrahkaramian Rebels.
It is said that Romuva's forces were completely surrounded by Thrahkaramian forces, with no way out but death. Romuva, seeing the hopelessness of the situation, etched this mark into the ground. What happened next is disputed.
Some say that Romuva's body was suddenly encased in a shield of light, making his impervious to physical damage. Taking advantage of this, Romuva struck deep into the Thrahkaramian lines at the speed of lightning, slewing over 300 soldiers and allowing for the Marakharthian army to regroup and later launch a successful counteroffensive, pushing out the enemy forces from Aldmer. When the shield finally did run out, Romuva fought on, slewing 60 more soldiers before he saw (person's name has been lost to time) in the back ranks of the Thrahkaramian army. Apparently, the two had been good friends before the civil war broke out. Romuva shouted out: "I heard the king of Thrahkaram has placed a plentiful bounty on my head. So, on account of our friendship, take my death and receive your rightful pension!" Immediately afterwards, Romuva took his own life.
Other sources state that Romuva's symbol soon spread out into a massive rift splitting off the western part of the nation, causing the great divide that is now the channel between the Romuva Islands (Named in his honor) and the Mainland. Romuva was never seen again.
