Glorious Existence wrote:I remember the early morning eclipse 1961 in coastal Southern Kent ( I was 7) and the 1999 when I was in Cornwall, on a country hill, clouds cleared suddenly and we were treated to the grey line and the near blackness rapidly approaching in the distance, it was incredibly dramatic as if a giant hand had swept across the sky.

There were dogs in our group some of whom laid down as if to sleep, birds fell silent and young children were either amazed or whimpering! I was boggled to silence ( if you know me you would say that's impossible!) by a weird primeval fear as if I had seen fire for the first time.

I was in southern Germany for the 1999 eclipse, supposedly the best region. The city had turned the occasion into a kind of festival, decorating the town hall and so on. There were advertising campaigns about correct use of obscuring glasses and so on.

The big day came with thick grey clouds and stubborn drizzle. But right on schedule it gradually went dark and very cold and quiet and then after ten minutes back to grey. The cloud was a perfect filter for viewing the sun, though people were faithfully squinting through the special glasses.
