Did you know? A Confederate man by the name of James McClintock designed what could be one of the prototypes of a submarine in 1863 and was in service on February 17, 1864 (the first submarine created was in 1620). At the time of launch, the submarine labeled the H. L. Hunley was sent to attack the USS Housatonic (1861 ship, the one from the American Civil War). The so-called "fish torpedo boat" managed to sink the Housatonic but also managed to kill its entire crew due to the spar torpedo (a weapon consisting of a bomb placed at the end of a long pole), and it sank for the third time as before launching it in to battle, it had already sunk and killed its crew twice in earlier test runs.
