The Kingdom of Beraland is a massive, efficient nation, ruled by King Dom Manuel III of Lower Zomana with an iron fist, and renowned for its state-planned economy, compulsory military service, and irreverence towards religion. The hard-nosed, cynical, humorless population of 3.475 billion Beralandians are kept under strict control by the oppressive government, which measures its success by the nation's GDP and refers to individual citizens as "human resources."

The enormous, corrupt, moralistic, well-organized government juggles the competing demands of Defense, Law & Order, and Industry. It meets to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Bera Bay. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 67.6%.

The thriving Beralandian economy, worth 266 trillion Bezols a year, is driven entirely by a combination of government and state-owned industry, with private enterprise illegal. However, for those in the know, there is a large, well-organized, quite specialized black market in Trout Farming, Basket Weaving, Retail, and Tourism. The private sector mostly consists of enterprising ten-year-olds selling lemonade on the sidewalk, but the government is looking at stamping this out. Average income is 76,709 Bezols, with the richest citizens earning 8.9 times as much as the poorest.

Scientists have great chemistry with their subjects, citizens spend millions on microtransactions to feed virtual orphans while actual orphans starve overseas, edutainment video games are taking Beraland's students to the next level, and Beraland isn't what it used to be. Crime, especially youth-related, is totally unknown, thanks to a very well-funded police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Beraland's national animal is the Bear.
