AFAIK, most northward flowing rivers are in rural areas, incl. Siberia, Canada, or a Colombian/Guyanese jungle. The Nile is therefore the only one associated with a large human population living on its banks, this makes it seem from a human habitation perspective that they are rare. (I'm Social Studies teacher)
