Something that sets our galaxy--we would say the Mechyrdian galaxy, but that would anger many other interstellar polities--apart from most other universes and galaxies is that it has a lot less genetic diversity in sapient life. Instead of humans on one world, Tylans on another world, and some third species on yet another world, in our galaxy, humans, as well as Tylans, evolved on many worlds; human worlds in the galactic western half, and Tylan worlds in the galactic eastern half.

Only on two worlds did humans invent FTL travel independently: Earth in the galactic south and Theden in the galactic north. Earth remained a bunch of different nations, such as the American Empire and the Chinese Hegemony, while by the time of Theden's first steps into the stars, they had already been united into a single government for decades. Tylans invented the FTL drive on only one world: Tyla. There, they existed for about a century as the Tylan Federation, colonized some worlds, before being conquered by the Thedish human government that had already taken control of 1/3 of the galaxy.

The reason for this lack of genetic variety is because, about 50 million years ago, the Prodroman Realm collapsed, their core worlds being sucked into a spatial rift called the Aedon Vortex. In order to keep the galaxy alive, the few Prodromans that were left spread genetic material all across the various worlds of the galaxy, specially encoded to ensure that life on those worlds would evolve to be like them: sapient minds and humanoid forms.

As for how we manage who's in charge, there are several different forms of government across the galaxy: Mechyrdia is a parliamentary empire, the Dutch Outer Space Company is a colonial corporation, Niskon and Ilkhai are republics, Isarnareykk is a corrupt anocracy, the Diadochus Masra Draetsen is an aristocratic khanate, etc.
