Etymology
The name Ayauitlan is thought to come from Nahuatl ayauitl ("fog") [ajawitɬ], with the most popular interpretation of the name being "Place of fog". However other interpretations such as "Place besides the fog" or "Place under the fog" have also been discussed.
The name originated from the thick fog that is common in the region, which in local folklore was attributed as coming from the maw of the Smoking Jaguar.
