The hard-nosed, cynical, humorless population of 8.904 billion Maybellites are ruled with an iron fist by the dictatorship government, which ensures that no-one outside the party gets too rich. In their personal lives, however, citizens are relatively unoppressed; it remains to be seen whether this is because the government genuinely cares about its people, or if it hasn't gotten around to stamping out civil rights yet.

The large, corrupt, socially-minded, well-organized government juggles the competing demands of Administration, Industry, and Law & Order. It meets to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Maybellegrad. The average income tax rate is 84.9%, and even higher for the wealthy.

All industry is owned and run by the government, the sound of wooden legs echo throughout Amabilis after the recent introduction of the Foot Tax, factories are regularly demolished to make way for low-cost housing areas, and several citizens have complained about scientists abducting their pets for experimentation. Crime is a problem. Amabilis's national animal is the eagle, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to toxic air pollution, and its national religion is Nashrelig.
