The eastern ocean horizon glimmered in the afternoon sunlight, the deep swirling waters sparkling in a celestial, made terrestrial dance. Watching the performance from afar was Cardinal Geiraldi, seated in his rocking chair at his tiny cliffside home. Despite his prominence and importance as the Cardinal of Vittlaup and the leader of the Zhyvles Cult, he lived a life of near poverty, his luxury only expressed in the ornate garments that he conducts his profession in. Otherwise, he gently swayed in his chair, one hand holding a pewter mug of cheap coffee and the other a printed copy of the Edda. His calloused thumb left his reading progress open as he sipped his coffee and watched the horizon. Emptiness pervaded the view. Neither land nor ship took a focal point, let alone any presence.

Geiraldi could only look deeper into the horizon, his knuckles whitening as he tightened the grip on his Edda. His thumb remained tightly stamped next to a verse:

“And of the fifth son of Magogr, Balamr; He ventured through the eastern waters and settled his patrilineage there. He built his hall on the first island and it was his sons and his grandsons that united the fractured islands.”

Having glanced back down at that passage, Geiraldi could only fathom why the Fylkirate had not attempted to find the sons of Balamr. Surely, we have brought together the four continental sons of Heilagur Magogr; surely, we now have the resources and now the political permission to find Balamr’s sons…

Absent-mindedly, the elderly Geiraldi muttered to himself, “Now is our time, Hvitakristr. I will inform your vicar of your revelation to me. We will unite your sons. Amen.”

The harbors of Haithabu scurried with preparation, a mix of laborers, priests, scholars, and uniformed soldiers all intermixing like a bird’s eye kaleidoscope. The laborers lifted and hauled to the ships, made distinct by the sweat that rolled down their foreheads and redness of their skin: rations sat by boxes of blank parchment sat by cages of messenger pigeons, all awaiting their turn to be loaded onto one of the five military ships. The other categories of men loaded themselves onboard, some unpacking their luggage by their bunks and others conversing amongst themselves on the open deck.

Standing still in the current of men was Cardinal Geiraldi, dressed in a robe of deep red and gold detailing, and another man, uniformed in high-ranking officer clothing, both gazing upon the largest of the five ships.

“This must be the beauty I’m commanding, eh Geiraldi?”

Geiraldi smiled warmly, gripping his staff tighter to rebalance his weight as he lifted his hand and rested it on the other’s soldier, patting it with a frail weakness.

“That’s right, Admiral Yngvarr, Ormrinn Langi herself. The Fylkir’s generosity knows no bounds, bless Hvitakristr! Ah, that’s right!”

Adjusting his cuff links, Thiess waited patiently for Geiraldi to speak.

“Yes! Oh how the Fylkir is so generous! On his flagship, His Holiness has also provided one of his godpoles for you to cast out into the sea, just as our ancestors did.”

Geiraldi mumbled on in further praise and prayer while Yngvarr’s attention was fully encapsulated in his own thinking. Much responsibility was now put on the relatively new admiral. Having a personal possession of the Fylkir to cast into the ocean… it would bring him glory if he were to find it washed onto a shore of the unexplored islands. However, equally as much shame he would gain if he could not find it.

Returning his attention back, he returned Geiraldi’s affection, patting and resting his hand on his shoulder, as he spoke in a welcomed interruption,

“I will take excellent care of them.”

“And I will pray for your success, Admiral.”

The following morning, approximately 40 minutes before dawn, the Ormrinn Langi and its accompanying ships Fyris, Torgarjar, Bastad, and Vinoss left the port of Haithabu and began their journey eastward. The slow and late climbing Sun nearly blinded those who faced the unknown islands, but while some took in the radiant gaze of the divine as a chance for prayer, all those aboard took no offense whatsoever.

These five ironclad, wooden Taumi-class ships spent their entire day in transit, deriving from true east only to give a sailor’s salute to the Olavinlinna military base on Skuvseyk.

“On this first day,” writes Admiral Yngvarr by candlelight, “both wind and coal were in plentiful supply. The peddler engines chugged the Ormrinn Langi at a respectable base speed. Our winds were also favorable, blowing vigorously from the northwest, north-northwest, the full sails providing both expedited speed and fuel rationing. The waters were calm and glistened eagerly in the spring sunlight. Around midday, some of the crewmen on deck found amusement in the seahawks that glided alongside the ship for some hours. Surely, we have earned the favor of Hvitakristr. I will spend the rest of my evening praying that these favors will be continued.”
